On Sunday Oct. 15, The Hearts Converse Kickback returned after a two-year hiatus. We brought the highly-anticipated conversation circle to the cool living room vibes at Ode to Babel in Brooklyn.
“Can I Live” centered around self-care and maintaining sanity in a world that marginalizes many of us people of color, women, and queer individuals.
The conversation was eye-opening and also reminded us that we are going through much of the same frustrations in the real world as the next person. One key point of the conversation was how important it is to remove the stigma of openly discussing mental and emotional health. Also we discussed how to manage the burden of racism when it is on our backs in the workplace.
One topic that was mentioned but that we did not get to discuss in-depth, due to time, was specifically how sexism affects the women in the room. This is something we want to center in a future event.
Overall, by affirming each other and sharing our day-to-day experiences, we all left with substantial takeaways that we will carry with us into the future.
